Ashish Sanghrajka - Big Five Tours & Expeditions

A native of Kenya, Ashish Sanghrajka learned early on about the family company, Big Five Tours & Expeditions. He saw the value of customer relationships when clients dined with his family in their Nairobi home. In the mid 1980s, the family relocated to New York. Sanghrajka attended the University of Arizona in Tucson, graduating with a degree in political science, with a special focus on international economics. He worked as an economic analyst and institutional trader at a Fortune 500 firm’s capital markets division. But his passion for travel resurfaced, so he joined Big Five in 2002 and became president in 2008, when his father, Mahen Sanghrajka, became CEO. Sanghrajka’s passion continues to drive innovation at Big Five, including a decision several years ago to move away from the mass-tourism mindset and large lodges used throughout Kenya. Big Five supports the conservancy model in Kenya to the fullest extent possible. Small, privately held conservancies include small-tented camps and private reserves that offer a sustainable approach in the areas of game management, habitat conservation, and cultural preservation. Big Five continues to push the envelope on innovation in the travel industry while remaining committed to the principles of sustainable tourism.
